Severe Shortages Threaten Continuity of Services for Amputees and Individuals with Paralysis

In light of the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip for over 21 months which has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and injuries, including thousands of limb amputations caused by direct bombardments and high-impact explosions the Artificial Limbs and Polio Center (ALPC), affiliated with Gaza Municipality, is operating under unprecedented pressure. The number of patients requiring urgent rehabilitative care, prosthetic limbs, and assistive devices continues to rise rapidly.

Amid this deepening humanitarian crisis, the Center expresses its grave concern over the imminent threat of service suspension for thousands of amputees and individuals with paralysis including men, women, and children due to a critical shortage of raw materials and essential equipment. These are required for the production, fitting, and maintenance of prosthetic limbs and mobility aids.

The shortage is a direct result of the ongoing Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip and the continued restriction of vital humanitarian and medical supplies

The disruption in the flow of materials is severely hampering the Center’s ability to deliver its essential rehabilitative services, which are crucial to helping patients regain basic mobility, dignity, and independence.

Should the current situation persist, the Center will be left with no choice but to suspend the majority of its operations further worsening the suffering of thousands of patients and deepening

the physical and psychological consequences of disability in an already dire humanitarian environment.

We urgently appeal to the international community, humanitarian agencies, and all people of conscience to take immediate and effective action. It is essential to exert pressure on the occupying authorities to lift restrictions on the entry of humanitarian supplies particularly those necessary for medical.
