Launch of a Cooperation Initiative Between Palestinian Cities and Barcelona Municipality

As part of ongoing communication between Gaza Municipality, other Palestinian municipalities, and Barcelona Municipality, and following a letter sent by Gaza Mayor Dr. Yahya Al-Sarraj to Barcelona Municipality, Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni announced during an official event the reactivation of the “District 11” initiative as a tool for cooperation with Palestinian cities.

The event featured video messages from Gaza Mayor Dr. Yahya Al-Sarraj, Ramallah Mayor Issa Kassis, and Bethlehem Mayor Maher Qanawati, who expressed their deep gratitude to Barcelona Municipality for its humanitarian solidarity with the Palestinian people, emphasizing that this initiative makes Palestinian municipalities feel that Barcelona stands by their side during the most difficult times.

The initiative aims to strengthen and expand technical and municipal cooperation with the municipalities of Gaza, Ramallah, and Bethlehem, and to contribute to their reconstruction from the effects of the ongoing aggression. Under the initiative, staff from Barcelona Municipality will be assigned to coordinate joint projects with Palestinian cities, modeled on Barcelona’s district management system, with an initial budget allocation of €1.5 million.

Gaza’s Mayor expressed appreciation to Barcelona Municipality and its Mayor for standing with the Palestinian people and launching an initiative that will support reconstruction efforts and strengthen the resilience of Palestinian cities.

For his part, the Mayor of Barcelona stressed that the launch of the initiative is a message of solidarity from the city of Barcelona and the Spanish people with the Palestinian people and their right to live in peace and dignity, affirming that crimes will not go unpunished and calling for efforts towards the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
